Summary
  • Part 1 discusses the ravages of slavery for over four centuries on the African continent in comparison to some of the world's greatest civilizations, such as the Pharoahs of Egypt
  • Part 2 looks at how three different communities cope in varied and hostile environments, from the cattle-herders in Kenya to the more prosperous farmers in Sukur and Mali
  • Part 3 focuses on the routes of the medieval gold trade through the African continent. Rulers grew rich and powerful; art and architecture flourished; Islamic law, order, and religion were introduced
  • Part 4 shows the wonderful sculptures and carvings left behind by African kings and queens. Also a visit to Kano, Nigeria, where a king still holds court and presides over rituals
  • Part 5 looks at the succession of Europeans who came to Africa: from explorers, to missionaries, and finally men like Cecil Rhodes, seeking an empire
  • Part 6 begins in the 1880s to about 30 years later when all but two African countries came under colonial rule
  • Part 7 discusses the major struggles for African independence in Ghana, Kenya, Algeria, the Belgian Congo, then finishes with the struggles in Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, and finally South Africa
  • Part 8 focuses on how some African nations have come to terms with the legacy of colonial rule with African traditions
