Summary
Turley examines the motivation, emotions, and history behind the "spontaneous shrines" created by the general American public in association with the Vietnam War. These spontaneous shrines are described as items, often photographs, medals, letters, clothing and teddy bears that are left at a place of remembrance in an unofficial, yet deeply personal and meaningful way. In addition, a brief overview of the Vietnam War in the terms of personal, cultural and social impacts is discussed
