Through the collection of these legends from the mouths of El Salvadorian natives, Nielson discusses the legend of Cipitio as a source of national pride, while the Siguanaba legends serves as a source of warning. In addition, characteristics of both legends as they affect popular culture throughout the country are explored

Nielson was raised in the town of Littleton, Colorado. In high school, Nielson began volunteering at a summer camp for children and adults with disabilities. Having enjoyed the work so much, Nielson continued her work there fir seven subsequent summers, starting as a volunteer, then as a full-time counselor, and finally as program director. In 2005, Nielson took her love for the disabled outside of the United States, spending a summer volunteering at an orphanage for children with disabilities in El Salvador. Upon returning, Nielson married her husband Ryan, before returning for a semester for El Salvador to volunteer together as their honeymoon. Upon returning, Rachel finished her degree from Brigham Young University.
