Summary
"I must search for unity. What is it, this one thing, and how do I find my way to it?" Arvo Part forges a unity of ancient and modern musical experiences in Fratres, which combines Gregorian chant, early polyphony, and minimalism. Part's tintinnabuli style emerged after his deepened religious devotion and self-imposed compositional silence. It embodies vertical and horizontal motivic unity. Part creates a dialog between a harmonic minor scale ("melodi" voice) and a tonic triad ("tintinnabular" voice). He weaves together two harmonic patterns, arranging a resilient form, which he uses to design six variations of a tintinnabular soundscape. Each version of Fratres is unique, yet related as brothers. It is the "one" of which Part speaks
