  • Unbound in a black cloth-covered portfolio (37 cm) with 20 leaves, 16 of which have signed woodcut engravings by Barry Moser depicting scenes from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius as told by Pliny the Younger. The title is printed letterpress on a panel on front cover of portfolio. Also included is a signed copy of the trade edition of the book (27 cm) printed on Senlis text paper and signed by Barry Moser on the first flyleaf. Both books Issued in a black cloth-covered clamshell box with title printed in gold on panel on spine. The trade edition rests in a custom sized pocket beneath the special edition portfolio in the clamshell box
  • "The relief engravings of Ashen Sky were executed in fall, 2006 by Barry Moser as a special commission by the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California for their production of Ashen Sky, The Letters of Pliny the Younger on the Eruption of Vesuvius, written and translated by Benedicte Gilman ... The portfolio was designed and printed letterpress by Vance Studley who wrote the introduction, at his studio in Pasadena, California. The font is ITC Galliard designed by Matthew Carter. The paper is Mowhawk Superfine. The clamshell boxes were fabricated by Sami Keats at Keatseye Bookworks in Easthampton, Massachusetts"--Colophon
