Summary
Authentic inquiry teaching practices emphasize original student generated research questions, experimentations, and conclusions. This mixed-method matched control study observed and examined six classrooms, 67 lessons, three teacher participants who implemented an authentic inquiry professional development program (treatment group), and three teachers in non-authentic inquiry professional development programs (control group). The teachers in the authentic inquiry group displayed significant differences in the folowing themes: Teacher Communication, Student Communication, and Student Activity. The teacher interview qualitative analysis showed that teachers hold different perspectives about Student Engagement. Both quantitative and qualitative findings identified one teacher outlier in the non-authentic inquiry control group who implemented similar teaching techniques practiced by the authentic inquiry teachers. This study demonstrates that teachers who implemented authentic inquiry showed more positive at-risk student-teacher interaction in their science classrooms
