Summary
Sustainability as a concept is commonly used to describe the anticipated, if not hopeful, social, political and economic outcomes of development paradigms. Unfortunately, like so many other ubiquitous and uncritically examined terms used in the multi-disciplinary arena of international development, "sustainability" can take on a host of meanings depending on the person, program, agency, or organization etc. and thier specific agendas (see Easterly, 2006; Rowland, 2004; Sachs, 2005; Scoot, 1976). Through a case study of the Royal Project Foundation of Northern Thailand, examining its history, development, organizational structure, and internactions with other agencies, I discuss, mroe generally, the issue of sustainability in development projects generically. In particular I define economic, political, and organizational sustainability and show that certain types of sustainability may be more desirable than others in development projects. I argue that a thorough understanding of "sustainability" in each circumstance, environment, and time under consideration is required for practitioners, researchers, and participants to fully comprehend the impact, condition, and aims of development projects
