Summary
"Frederick II ruled an empire from Denmark to Silicy, and as far east as Israel. He is admired to this day by military specialists who consider him one of the greatest conquerors of all time. This program traces his life and times, and his attempts to consolidate imperial power in Italy at the expense of the papacy in the 13th century. In an attempt to organize his Italian territories, Frederick was frustrated by the Lombard cities and by the popes. Embarking on the Sixth Crusade in 1223, Frederick took possession of Jerusalem and crowned himself king. The popes, however, rejected Frederick's claim to the crown, and continued to thwart the solidification of his power until his death in 1250
