Portugal was born in Virginia and moved to Brussels, Belgium at the age of four, where she lived until she graduated from high school. She then attended Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University-Hawaii, and the University of Utah until returning to Provo, Utah to study English at Brigham Young University. She met her husband, Noel Portugal, in a surfing class while attending BYU-Hawaii in 2003. The couple was married on December 18, 2004 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Portugal received her Bachelor's of Art from BYU in December of 2005.
