Summary
De Souza collects various missionary stories that have been generalized into folklore in order to instruct, reinforce worldview, or encourage a unity that helps missionaries to cope with the stresses of their jobs. De Souza separates these stories into categories: those that inspire fear, those that inspire reverence, those that simply inspire, and those that use humor to deal with common hardships. She suggests that missionaries stories are less concerned with being factual and more concerned with creating unity, providing for tension release, and coping with burdens
