Summary
Walt Whitman encouraged the development of women, but only in the context of motherhood. They would raise a new generation to reform society, which in time would hasten the millennium. Only in this new millenarian age would women participate equally with men. Surveys the standard ideal of womanhood in 19th-century America, along with some of the leading proposals for reform. Whitman's own descriptions of the ideal woman focused on the physiological dimensions necessary for reproductive perfection. Based largely on Whitman's writings; 24 notes
