Summary
Beginning with an opening scene from Oedipus Rex, Lesson 1 provides an historical perspective on the Greeks and their experiences with democracy. Lesson 2 describes and analyzes Oedipus' character and actions in view of Aristotle's theory of the "fatal flaw" in all tragic characters. In Lesson 3 Oedipus is beaten by the gods. The play asserts that man, no matter how great his ability, is subordinate to God. In Lesson 4 man is seen as standing between God and beast, always searching for his rightful place. Knowledge of life through the painful search for truth is revealed in this final lesson of the series
