Summary
This thesis examines the job evaluations and career choices of young professionals working in the Big 4 accounting firms. Through a qualitative analysis of 32 interviews with young CPA's who generally report high job satisfaction despite largely negative feeling about most of their day-to-day work, we develop of model for evaluations of movement which can offset or supersede other evaluations of the actual work itself. Further, we extend Levinson's concept of the "Dream" as the guiding standard by which movement is evaluated, and describe both the dreams and how they are continually refined. We also shed light on how evaluations of movement take place and build a typology of three broad categories with 12 sub-categories of movement that the accountants used in evaluating their progress towards their dream. Finally we examine how evaluations of movement affect job attitudes, particularly job satisfaction and turnover intentions, finding that perceiving a job as facilitating movement towards the dream has strong positive outcomes for job attitudes, even in the face of otherwise large discrepancies from the accountants' "dream."
