Summary
Leetham charts reading traditions in different generations of family members. She suggests that reading aloud is traditional due to its set of unwritten rules and the variations that arise from telling and retelling stories. Amongst the consistent rules that govern reading aloud, Leetham finds that the mother usually reads books to her children while the father invents stories, that fairytales and legends are frequently read, that modern picture books supplement these traditional stories, that reading aloud is usually done at a specific time and/or on special occasions. Leetham finds a high correlation between children who were read to by their parents and children who grow up to read to their children. Leetham suggests that parents read to their children to teach reading skills, to provide a safe refuge from stress, to create a stronger family bond, and to provide children with morals, social skills, role models and inspiration
