Summary
The episode begins with the nightmarish Union disaster at Fredericksburg and comes to two climaxes the following spring: at Chancellorsville, Lee wins his most brillant victory but loses Stonewall Jackson; at Vicksburg, Grant's attempts to take the city by storm are stopped. Army life and life on the home front North and South are examined. As the episode ends, Lee decides to invade the North again to draw Grant's forces from Vicksburg
