Summary
Williams investigates the folkloric motivations behind the sports narratives told amongst members of the Brigham Young University football team. Williams believes that sports narratives focus on exceptional stories from the football player's past in order to equate those exceptional skills with the player's current athletic abilities. Sensationalized sports narratives defy the boundaries of normal athletic possibilities, and are often told to motivate a team to perform better. Williams suggests that sports narratives are frequently told at times if disjunction and alienation, when a new player on a team tries realizes his skills are in doubt or a veteran is threatened by new competition. These stories are told as self-validating stories that release the anxieties created by inter-team competition and criticism and help the player to gain standing in the sports group
