Summary
Society woman Edith Hardy (Ward) gambles away the Red Cross funds she had been entrusted with and now must turn to an Asian ivory trader (Hayakawa) to cover the loss and save her reputation. Only later does she realize that by accepting the loan, she has become his property, signified by a brand he burns into her naked back. In a state of hysteria, Edith shoots her captor, a crime that is pinned on her husband (Dean)
