  • "Presentation copy: "A.H. Clough from M.A.". Here is the poet in his little-known role as an inspector of schools, a position he held for many years. Arthur Clough was a friend from Oxford days and this must have been the last book Arnold sent him, for Clough died in 1861. It will be remembered that "Thyrsis" was written in memory of this friend. A remarkably fine copy and very scarce in presentation state." See Magee, D. Victoria R.I., entry 36.
  • Binder's ticket on lower pastedown: "Bound by Westleys & Co. London".
