  • The central contribution of this work is a study of the static and dynamic characteristics of LADD actuators. A mathematical model is developed suitable for predicting the behavior of various LADD configurations including a motor-coupled LADD actuator. Static effects of equilibrium state upon contraction rate, mechanical advantage, and static stability are studied. The basic model is linearized about various equilibrium states to investigate dynamic characteristics including natural frequencies, mode shapes, and frequency response characteristics. Experimental testing was conducted to validate the dynamic effects predicted analytically. Random excitation and system identification techniques were used for the dynamic measurements
  • Basic conclusions regarding the effects of static and dynamic characteristics on the design of LADD actuated systems are drawn. From static considerations it was found that the cell length to radius ratio of two is near optimal, and that small relative rotations between the rings is desirable. Increasing the number of cells to obtain significant excursions, however, reduces the dynamic band width (lowest natural frequency) of the actuator, indicating a trade off is required between static and dynamic effects
